Choline - brain support

Choline is one of the substances classified as a B vitamin, which is important for brain function. It has been documented that additional supplementation can improve brain function and help protect the nervous system. Our body is able to produce choline (or, if you prefer, vitamin B4), although in some circumstances larger amounts are advisable. It is a great option for people who place a heavy mental burden on themselves and live under considerable stress.
Choline supports brain function
Choline occurs naturally in phospholipids and cannot be produced inside the body without the presence of other B vitamins – namely B9 and B12. Its synthesis also requires amino acids – serine and methionine. Thanks to the presence of choline, acetylcholine can be produced, a neurotransmitter so important for the proper functioning of the nervous system. Its role is also to stabilize cell structures and support brain function. In supplementation, it comes in various forms that can be used depending on needs – e.g. Alpha GPC or CDP choline (citicoline).
Despite the body's ability to synthesize this compound, supplementation may be particularly helpful for people doing mental work and/or dealing with high exposure to stress. It is no coincidence that choline is classified as a nootropic substance, that is, a compound with a safe action that supports mental functions. It is worth knowing that a deficiency of this compound leads, among other things, to concentration problems, headaches, anxiety/depressive states, cognitive disorders, and general dysfunction of the nervous system. This condition is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and, in fact, for the child's development during this period. Supplement forms often do not contain choline alone. A good example is CDP choline, in which the content of the compound usually does not exceed 20% (on average, it is about 18%). This does not mean, however, that it is less effective in the context of mental functions… What's more, citicoline also contains cytidine, which is then converted to uridine.
Thanks to it, we are more motivated to act, because it affects the so-called dopamine receptor density. Better functioning of the dopaminergic system will certainly come in handy when we have a lot of mental work ahead of us. Choline, or rather its supplement form, citicoline, is one of the best-researched forms of this compound when it comes to supporting cognitive function. It has been documented that also thanks to cytidine (-> uridine) it can beneficially affect memory, learning ability, and concentration. Many people successfully use it before important events, such as lectures, tests, exam sessions, or during mental work, which often also tends to be highly stressful.

How to use it and which one to choose?
First and foremost, choose the form that best suits our needs. Let's start with the fact that the most popular supplement is choline bitartrate, which can serve, among other things, as a good ergogenic aid, support toxin elimination, and help improve the lipid profile. However, choline in this form will not be very effective in terms of improving cognition or regenerating the nervous system. The same applies to DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol, another choline analog). On the other hand, Alpha GPC, and especially citicoline (CDP choline), will be an excellent choice when it comes to improving cognitive function due to its link with the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Studies confirm their effectiveness in this regard, and these are the forms that will be preferred. It is worth bearing in mind that, in terms of improving memory, CDP choline is not an immediately acting supplement. Alpha GPC, on the other hand, can be used both as needed and long term (depending on preference). It is worth mentioning that citicoline will additionally affect well-being and mental comfort, while Alpha GPC may also be useful for training purposes. Dosage may vary – remember that everyone has different sensitivity to specific substances. Alpha GPC is usually used in the range of 300mg – 1200mg, while CDP choline from 500mg to as much as 2000mg per day. Both forms, unlike e.g. typical choline bitartrate, are able to cross the blood–brain barrier, which allows them to keep our brain in good condition while also enhancing cognitive abilities.
