Different forms of choline - which one to choose?

Choline, which is available as a supplement in various forms, is considered one of the better nootropic substances to start with when supporting mental functions. Some forms of the compound can be successfully used for health-related and training purposes.

Acetylcholine and the use of choline

Choline (vitamin B4) is primarily a precursor of acetylcholine (ACh), a neurotransmitter of great importance for the nervous system and the brain. The neurotransmitter is produced in cholinergic neurons, and choline is a key element, though not the only one. All the same, it is its availability that determines ACh production and, as a result, the course of some related functions. Among the key functions of acetylcholine are a whole range of cognitive functions, such as the ability to learn, remember, and concentrate. In addition, it is important for the cardiovascular system, as it is partly responsible for contractions and is also able to lower blood pressure. Adequate amounts have a beneficial effect on the digestive system, intestinal peristalsis, and the excretory system. What is more, choline itself is involved in the metabolism of all three basic nutrients. It is also important for the detoxification mechanism. All the same, its effects are associated primarily with mental functions and the parasympathetic nervous system. It has been documented that while acetylcholine deficiencies can be very serious in their effects (concentration disorders, nausea, general malaise, dizziness), stimulating its production can be beneficial in many respects. This can be achieved through choline supplementation.

Choline - which supplement will be best?

The fact is that higher choline availability is associated with increased ACh production. However, not every supplement form works in the same way - it may produce different results and affect the body at different speeds and to different degrees. In terms of its effect on acetylcholine, not every product will be equally effective... Which of course does not mean that it cannot be successfully used in other areas.

Choline bitartrate

A perfect example is its most popular and at the same time basic form, namely choline bitartrate. Usually, the content of the compound in the supplement is around 40%, which is quite a high value. However, in this form it is not able to actively cross the blood-brain barrier, so not only are high doses indicated, but in practice it will not translate into increased acetylcholine production, improved memory, or support for brain function. It will also not be as effective in protecting against neurodegenerative changes. It can, however, be used for general support of the body and maintaining good health. Supplementation proves useful for liver function, its protection, as well as more efficient removal of toxins and other harmful substances. It will also help with the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, while positively affecting the lipid profile. Even the basic form of choline can be good for pregnant women, as long as they control the doses and there are no significant contraindications. In cases of deficiencies, which sometimes occur during pregnancy, it will be a helpful supplement.

DMAE, or dimethylaminoethanol

Some sources classify DMAE as one of the forms of choline, while others do not. Despite the disputed issue on this topic, it is a choline analogue, that is, a compound with a similar structure, although with some differences. It differs in having one fewer methyl group than choline (two instead of three). The fact is that, in terms of crossing the blood-brain barrier and affecting acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for the brain, it is more effective than the bitartrate form. However, this does not happen efficiently enough for it to be considered a highly effective nootropic. While it will not be a super product for the brain or for the protection and regeneration of the nervous system, the use of DMAE brings positive effects

  • support for the treatment of chronic fatigue,
  • support for neuroses and depressive states,
  • supplementing choline deficiencies,
  • a mild stimulating effect on the nervous system,
  • an effect on improving motor functions,
  • general support for the body.

It is worth knowing that use of this product is not recommended during pregnancy due to possible side effects - it does not have a positive effect on the fetus, as it does on adults.

Alpha GPC (choline alfoscerate)

Alpha GPC is one of the more effective and valued supplemental forms of choline, with a content of around 40% in the molecule. This can successfully be considered a nootropic, because it actively and efficiently crosses the blood-brain barrier. What is more, it works well on the cholinergic system and increases ACh production. Alpha GPC is used when we want a quick cholinergic effect, stimulation, and increased concentration. This is mainly due to its high choline content. On the other hand, not only choline but also glycerophosphate is formed from the breakdown of the compound after it is delivered to the body. Due to its rapid effects, and thus the possibility of using its action as needed, it works well before important events requiring a high degree of concentration. Documented properties of choline alfoscerate, apart from increasing concentration, include an effect on growth hormone and improved muscle-brain communication. For this reason, it is used as a pre-workout by physically active people. Taking it as needed translates into increased performance and efficiency of training sessions, and in the longer term, into improved physical parameters. As a side note, glycerophosphate helps maintain cell membranes in good condition. The advantages of Alpha GPC supplementation include, among others:

  • increased concentration,
  • improved memory / remembering,
  • better quality of training sessions,
  • increased GH levels,
  • improved ability to learn.

CDP Choline (citicoline)

Citicoline, like Alpha GPC, fairly efficiently crosses the blood-brain barrier. However, it contains less choline in the molecule, which means it may not cause an immediate, strong cholinergic effect. It stimulates acetylcholine production to a lesser extent, although it works very well with long-term use. The supplement stimulates the dopaminergic system and strengthens cell membranes. What is more, it gives good results in terms of cognition and protection of the nervous system. It is also attributed with a stimulating effect on neurogenesis. Its beneficial action is due not only to choline, but also to cytidine, which after entering the body is converted into uridine. Citicoline may work more slowly than alfoscerate, although it brings results that we will not experience with the other forms. Together with Alpha GPC, these are the best forms of the supplement, from which effective nootropic action can be expected. What can you count on with regular use of citicoline?

  • increased concentration,
  • mental clarity,
  • improved thought processes,
  • better memory,
  • protection of the nervous system,
  • improved ability to learn,
  • better well-being and reduced mood swings,
  • better motivation.
