Lactoferrin - benefits and uses

Lactoferrin - benefits and usesLactoferrin is a protein naturally found in human milk and other bodily fluids. It is also one of the key ingredients in the popular Colostrum. It is gaining increasing recognition and, as it turns out, rightly so - its use is associated with many benefits.

Lactoferrin – what is it and how does it work?

Lactoferrin is a fairly specific protein, characteristic of the bodily fluids of mammals. It was first isolated from milk, and the name of this glycoprotein is no coincidence. The combination of the words „lacto” (milk) and „ferrum” (iron) refers to the compound's high affinity for iron. This is also associated with many important functions of lactoferrin. It is worth mentioning that lactoferrin is a flagship ingredient of Colostrum, and its best natural source is the so-called mother's first milk. It is thanks to it that an infant gains proper protection (immunity) against bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. It is therefore no surprise that this compound is used primarily in supporting the body's immunity. I mentioned that lactoferrin (or, if you prefer, lactotransferrin, Lf) shows a strong affinity for iron. This is linked, among other things, to the regulation of the immune response and antibacterial properties. It all comes down to improved iron uptake, and in turn – by using Lf – we block access to iron ions for many bacteria that need them to grow. It is often noted that lactoferrin has both antibacterial and bacteriostatic effects. The supplement has an immunostimulatory effect and works well not only as a preventive measure, but also during an infection. Studies confirm that it is most effective in the initial stages of infection. It significantly limits the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. As you surely remember, the bacterial flora and intestinal barrier integrity are two key elements in shaping the body's immunity. It not only reduces the risk of infection by influencing phagocytosis and limiting the formation of larger bacterial clusters, but also stimulates the activity of neutrophils while minimizing their apoptosis. In the context of immunity and intestinal bacteria, which regulate a multitude of body functions, a great option would be a combination of probiotics with lactoferrin, vitamin D3 and K2. Interestingly, it has been confirmed that it reduces the excessive proliferation of problematic yeasts, including Candida albicans. Lactoferrin interacts with cell walls, resulting in their death. The good news is that Lf supplementation works well for SIBO. Lactoferrin is a suitable option for people whose immunity is severely weakened and who therefore place a considerable burden on the immune system on a daily basis. This group includes, for example, athletes, especially in the pre-competition period. However, this does not apply only to professionals. Anyone who trains intensively should strengthen the immune system. Interestingly, the compound occurs naturally in the body and serves as a marker of inflammatory conditions and infections of various kinds. In such circumstances, the level of Lf in the body will rise, signalling that something is wrong. As an interesting fact, lactotransferrin levels are checked in stool samples to rule out (or confirm) inflammatory bowel diseases. Given this, it is no surprise that the supplement itself has anti-inflammatory properties. Indirectly, it may help reduce oxidative stress and limit the action of aggressive free radicals (antioxidant function). This happens because of the already mentioned high affinity for iron. This element can stimulate oxidative stress. Moreover, lactoferrin affects its absorption in the intestines, its efficient transport to cells, and thus better utilization. These beneficial properties should interest not only people who want to strengthen immunity, but also those struggling with problems involving sugar and insulin metabolism. It has been shown that lactoferrin improves cells' sensitivity to insulin and increases glucose uptake. laktoferyna a jelita i układ pokarmowySince it is effective in insulin resistance, it will have a positive effect on health and body-shaping efforts (especially during fat reduction).

In summary, what benefits does lactoferrin provide?

  • improves gut health,
  • supports the body's immunity and improves the functioning of the immune system,
  • protects against bacterial and viral infections,
  • limits the proliferation of and eliminates problematic yeasts,
  • has anti-inflammatory effects,
  • has antibacterial and bacteriostatic effects,
  • is effective for SIBO, Candida overgrowth, Helicobacter pylori infection,
  • improves insulin sensitivity (supports sugar metabolism and helps reduce problems with blood glucose levels),
  • supports health and body shaping (weight management),
  • increases iron absorption,
  • has antioxidant effects and reduces oxidative stress,
  • serves as a marker of inflammation,
  • effectively supports the fight against pathogenic microorganisms resistant to standard antibiotic therapy.
In my opinion, lactoferrin is an excellent addition to health and sports supplementation. And how do you take care of your immunity and gut?
