What is potassium and why is it important?

The human body contains about 150 g of potassium, nearly 90% of which is located inside cells.

Potassium is one of the most important intracellular electrolytes in the body and is involved in many biological processes. It plays a key role in:

• regulation of water-electrolyte balance,
• nerve conduction,
• muscle function, including the heart muscle,
• maintaining normal blood pressure in the context of sodium–potassium balance,
• transport of nutrients into cells,
• activation of systemic enzymes,
• metabolism of carbohydrates and proteins.

The body does not store large amounts of potassium, therefore its regular intake in the diet is important.

Potassium deficiency

With a healthy, balanced diet, providing an adequate amount of potassium should not be a problem.

Potassium deficiency may result from:

• an inadequate diet,
• excessive loss of this nutrient through sweat due to high temperatures or increased physical activity,
• excessive loss through the gastrointestinal tract (diarrhea, vomiting),
• use of diuretic medications.
